I chose the Horticulture Technician program at DC as I wanted a solid base with which to establish an urban farm in Durham Region. The Hort Tech program has taught me how to create foundations, how to effectively design space, and how to mitigate any potential landscape issues. That combined with my experience on the DC Farm this past year, and many years of community gardening, have now made that dream a possibility. My plans include working both with landscape professionals and local farmers, learning all that I can, until that possibility becomes a reality. My long-term goal (10 years) is to develop an urban farm in Ajax, where there is currently no access to even a farmers’ market. I will create a space where people will not only be able to acquire locally grown organic produce, but will be able to do so in a beautifully landscaped urban setting and reconnect with our rapidly disappearing natural environment.
